“#MyStory is about a knitter who’s made her dreams come true with a vision, a ball of yarn and a pair of knitting needles.” —Brandi Harper (@purlbknit), Brooklyn, New York-based designer
“I taught myself to crochet when I was 14 and in all my time of knitting, I’ve followed someone else’s pattern maybe 10, 12 times, tops. Everything I make and design comes from my own head.
Being able to wear my goods made it easier to put them on display in my shop. Taking my own pictures is like playing dress up. I grabbed myself a camera — it’s not fancy but it gets the job done — and I take photos in my apartment or in my neighborhood. Living in the city, I’ve always loved the idea of being on a farm. I like to bring that feeling of all natural and homey and ‘these goods will last through the generations’ through my photography.
I love being able to make something with my own two hands. I do everything, the designing, the knitting, the photography. It’s always a hustle. But it’s a happy hustle.”
